| Thetford
Forest - March 2008 |
Our
Thetford Forest camp was well attended with 14 scouts even though
another 5 could not make it because of a school event.
We
were busy cycling for most of the time and it was first time for
cycling in the bomb holes for many of the scouts.
Some of the more intepid scouts
even got a go on the "Beast" - a fantastic downhill ride
with ups and downs and twisty turns through the trees. Great fun.
Others went and did another bomb hole with
unfortunate results.
Harry managed to come a cropper
going back up the other side of the bomb hole. However, it did give
the others an excuse for an ice cream.

.
We cooked by open fire and had
another of Dave's amazing venison stews. This cooked while a strange
hooded figure lurked in the background.
Another ride on the Sunday (a bit
easier this time) and then break camp. This was followed by break
Hugh in the game of football.
Another casualty.

| Suddon
Hall - Oct 2007 |
We
held an overnight camp at Suddon Hall in early October. It
had originally been planned to return to Heveningham Hall
but with the outbreak of blue tongue disease in the area we
decided to move closer to home where there was no sheep. It
was a good thing too because Sam turned up with a blue tongue
(very scary) - also have you seen the film "Black Sheep"?
This was a traditional camp in that we were cooking on open
fires and made it a green field camp.
Chas,
the 1st Otley scout leader very kindly offered to run a base
on using axes, knives and saws. All the scouts did well enough
to receive their axes and saws handling certificates and they
really enjoyed themselves as well as learning how to use axes,
saws, and knives safely.

We
also ran a parallel base of bivvy making. This was also great
fun and some of the scouts were brave enough to sleep in them.
Those who did sleep in the bivvies complained about Bernard
making his usual owl noises and keeping them awake. What they
didn't know was Bernie had left by then and the real owls.
We
had a wide game on the Saturday and a camp fire to close the
day. On Sunday morning we had a bike ride in a new area for
us thanks to a friendly farmers wife who gave us permission
to ride throught heir farm.
Overall,
a good fun event. A full set of pictures is in the Photo Gallery. |

| Summer
Camp - July 2007 |
Summer
Camp this year was in South Wales. Unfortunately the worst floods
in living memory happened in Wales and the Borders on the day before
we left. Our campsite was right by a river and the field we were
using was pretty waterlogged. We pitched out tents with lakeside
views.
Overall we did have a good time
but it was hard work with mud everywhere. We did have lots of rain
during the week but nothing like the previous Friday.
Thursday and Friday wereactually
quite good and we ended up walking on the mud rather than in it
on the Saturday.
Our activities went quite well
and we managed to get to the top of some local mountains, did some
caving, had an Explorer overnight stay and the mountains and did
some awesome downhill biking (although we did have the uphill bits
as well). We missed our early morning swims thanks to the river
flowing so fast.
The food was tremendous thanks
to Bernie. As always it was his birthday during camp - in fact he
had two birthday parties - one on top of the mountain and one in
camp. People did get carried away though:

| Sailing
Night - July 2007 |
We
arranged a night out on the Adventures
Offshore yacht in early July. The weather was just right - sunny
and enough wind for us to sail but not too much to make it difficult.
We sailed out of Ipswich Marina
(yes Dave Ipswich marina not Fox's) and sailed out under the Orwell
bridge down to Pin Mill.
We were given lot's of biscuits
and drinks, learnt a lot about how to sail (including boat safety),
and saw a lovely sunset under the bridge. A really good night.
More pictures in the Photo Gallery.

| Centenary
Camp - June 2007 |
I'm not sure what it is about Heveningham
Hall
and large scout camps but we seem to have good weather for a say or
so and then the heavens open. This was what happened at the Millenium
Camp and this is what happened at the Centenary Camp. We got to Sunday
lunchtime and then it started raining continuously and heavily. In
the end it was decided to abandon camp a day early and a lot of very
wet and soggy scouts were collected on Sunday night. Still
we did have Friday night, Saturday and Sunday morning for activities.
There was an excellent selection of activities ranging from sailing, canoeing
and rafting, through shooting, archery, games, and backwoods cooking
(just to mention a few).
